Our Beginnings

Toltec Chihuahuas began when a 14 year old girl’s constant badgering for a horse was met with an eventual compromise of a dog. On December 6, 1969, my aunt dropped a Long Coat Chihuahua named Ten Cents in my lap and said “If you want her, she is your birthday and Christmas present.” Her breeders said she “wasn’t worth ten cents” because she was the only long coat in a litter of smooths and hence the name.  

 Ten Cents was a beautiful Irish setter red color, and incredibly smart. She and I showed in both Canada and the United States, receiving her Utility Dog degree in both countries.

In April of 1970, at our first match (a practice show) I met the women who were to become  my mentors, Chihuahua breeder, author and judge E. Ruth Terry and  her sister Marcia Greenberg.  I was eager to learn and they were equally eager to teach. A few years later I got my second Chihuahua from them, Totec. He was my first champion and second Utility titled dog. Totec was the founding dog for my line, Toltec Chihuahuas.

It wasn’t until 10 years later that I had my first litter. Since then, I have breed many champions and group placing dogs. We pride ourselves in having dogs that are sound in both body and mind as well as representative of the Chihuahua.  

 In my career, I also professionally trained dogs for attack, guard, police and obedience for five years.  I still do the occasional problem dog.  I believe that it is this background that makes me so insistent in a dog that is sound in mind and body.  They are our companions, our friends, our family.
